COMIC BOOK COLLECTING: Let’s find an under the radar issue

The Fantastic Four are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with them will arrive all of their classic villains and related characters. With the very first drop of official casting news, it’s game over: Every Fantastic Four related comic book will break the Ebay system when that day comes.

Here’s a truly wonderful gem you should keep on your radar.

Silver Surfer Limited Series, issues 1 and 2. Published in the winter of 1988, this is a short story titled “Parable“, written by the man himself, Stan Lee, and drawn and colored by the legendary French artist and writer Moebius (Real name Jean Girard).

These two almost mythical creators collaborated on a new twist on the Galactus-Silver Surfer saga. This Eisner Award-winning series pits Silver Surfer in a battle of wits against a Galactus who has arrived on Earth, abolished all war and crime, and watches as the religion of Galactus creates anarchy across the world.

Cover dates December 1988 and January 1989.

Written by Stan Lee.

Artwork and lettering by Moebius.

Before the value of Silver Surfer and Galactus issues explode , you may want to take a look at getting your hands on these. Current ebay sales are reasonable now, with recent sales of the pair of books going in the range of $20 to $30.

There are graded books out there selling now. A pair graded at CGC 9.0 each sold for $102 on January 21, which should seem like quite a bargain down the road.

Another one to look out for: Marvel Age #71 which features this series on it’s cover. Recent sales are running in the $10 to $20 range.

This really is a fantastic read and the artwork is simply beautiful, cover to cover. A 30th anniversary edition collecting the two issues is also available. Here’s one example available on Ebay:

About the writer:

After years of watching and reading a few of my favorite things, it’s time to write about them. Movies and television, with a focus on comic book characters and stories filling up the movie theaters and TV screens.

Here’s the story about how all of this started, beginning with a random trip to a corner store in 1979.
